Despite the overall progress that is being made by the national road authorities in improving road safety, work zone accidents in Europe remain common.

In order to increase safety for road workers and road users the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (Austria), Lund University (Sweden) and Vias institute (Belgium) have been commissioned by the European platform for cooperation between national road authorities, CEDR, to develop practical recommendations for accident prevention, as well as tools and checklists for road safety inspections and audits.

The main aim of IRIS (Incursion Reduction to Increase Safety in road work zones) is to share best-practices on traffic management at work zones with national road authorities in Europe for short, medium and long term road works. This outcome is available as...

The project has received funding under the CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme – Call Safety 2016 from the following countries: Belgium-Flanders, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden and United Kingdom.

The IRIS project was started in September 2017 and will be concluded in June 2019 with an event on which the results of our research activities and recommendations will be presented.
